The new membership follows a fantastic introductory meeting between our Business Development Manager, Ian Marr, and Aaron Driver, Founder and Managing Director of the Sustainable Ports Association, to explore the challenges facing the sector and the opportunities for greater collaboration.
For Olympus Power, the partnership is a natural extension of our Energy Concierge approach: bringing together energy strategy, technology, finance and delivery to help organisations make confident long-term energy decisions.
What is the Sustainable Ports Association?
The Sustainable Ports Association brings together ports, suppliers, technology providers, contractors, developers and sustainability specialists to accelerate progress across the maritime industry and its wider supply chain.
Its mission extends beyond ports themselves. SPA recognises that meaningful decarbonisation requires collaboration throughout the interconnected network of shipping, logistics, manufacturing, infrastructure and technology businesses that keep goods moving.
According to SPA, around 75% of a port’s carbon footprint sits within its wider supply chain, placing collaboration with suppliers and partners at the heart of meaningful carbon reduction.
The Association now works across a network of more than 800 ports and supply chain partners worldwide, connecting organisations with expertise, technology, commercial opportunities and practical support to help turn sustainability ambitions into action.
Moving From Sustainability Targets to Action
One of the themes that particularly resonated during our conversation with Aaron was the need for a more proactive approach to sustainability.
Aaron’s vision for the Sustainable Ports Association has centred on building an organisation that actively connects the industry, identifies opportunities and supports genuine progress rather than allowing sustainability to become another box-ticking exercise.
SPA describes its own approach as “proactive and productive”, focusing on targeted connections and opportunities capable of moving businesses forward. Under Aaron’s leadership, the organisation has expanded its network while developing initiatives designed to help ports and their supply chains achieve meaningful ESG outcomes.
That philosophy strongly aligns with our own.
Sustainability increasingly crosses traditional sector boundaries. A port’s energy transition affects the vessels it serves, the logistics operators moving goods inland, the manufacturers within its supply chain, the infrastructure surrounding it and the energy networks supporting them all.
Progress therefore cannot happen in isolation.
The Energy Challenge Facing UK Ports
Electrification will be fundamental to the next generation of port infrastructure.
Shore power, electric vehicles, cargo handling equipment, charging infrastructure and increasingly electrified industrial operations all create additional electricity demand.
The challenge is that the transition is taking place against an already constrained UK electricity network.
During our introductory discussion, Aaron highlighted the difficulty created by grid infrastructure simply not being upgraded quickly enough to accommodate the pace of electrification required by industry.
SPA itself has identified accelerated grid connections as a major policy priority, calling for connections to be delivered in months rather than years alongside greater investment in shore power infrastructure.
For ports and the businesses surrounding them, waiting indefinitely for additional grid capacity cannot always be the only strategy.
This is where a broader approach to energy becomes increasingly important.
Building Energy Resilience Beyond the Grid

Our Business Development Manager, Ian Marr, will lead the Sustainable Ports Association relationship for Olympus Power, working with Aaron, the SPA team and its members to understand the energy challenges facing organisations throughout the sector.
